PART ONE: Reading A/ Comprehension(8 pts)
Read the text carefully and do the activities:
Parents of young children have an important role to play in protecting their kids from the invasive marketing, and in educating them about advertising from an early age. Children have difficulty distinguishing between advertising and reality in ads. A research has shown that kids are vulnerable to misleading advertising and that they don’t begin to understand that advertisements are not always true until they are eight; as a result, ads can distort their view of the world.
According to the Canadian Toy Testing Council, children often think that a toy actually can do a lot more than it can because of the way toys are portrayed in advertisements. Moreover, young children are actively targeted with violent entertainment means for adults. For instance, marketing young children toys that are based on restricted movies and Mature rated video games is a common industry practice. The packaging for one action figure recommended for 4 years old kids, invites them to “ join in the blood bath” by playing Nintendo version of the game though it is M-rated( for ages 17 and up).
Another research shows that most food advertising on children’s TV shows is for fast foods, soft drinks , candy and pre- sweetened cereals, while commercials for healthy food make up only 4 percent of those shown. Fast food chains spend more than 3 billion dollars a year on advertising , much of it aimed at children who are directly targeted by the fast food industry. The latter uses more than traditional commercials . Restaurants offer incentives such as contests, games ,free toys and merchandise related to movies, TV shows and even sports leagues. The result of all this aggressive marketing , a nation of overweight children.
These concerns have led some European countries to ban all advertising to children under 12 . A healthy society raises children to be responsible citizens rather than just consumers . Creating healthy and happy families means spending time together rather than spending money. Thus parents should promote a non- commercial family lifestyle.
