Today we're going to make very nice plastic text with a good light effect. The tutorial is pretty long but it's not that hard so here we go.

Create a new document (300x300) and write a word in a big bold font. Double-click on the text layer and stroke the word with a one pixel thick, dark-grey line. Then use a gradient overlay. You can choose the colors but make sure you have the same colors on both ends, just with a small difference in darkness (like red and dark-red).

Now use inner glow with a lighter version of the lightest color in the gradient (light-red). Settings should be like this:

The next style is the Inner Shadow. Now use a darker version of the darkest color in the gradient (very dark-red). Settings:

The last style is the Drop Shadow. Use a very dark color. Settings:

Note: you don't have to set the distance to 18, it can also be set to a value between 0 and 18. Some people like it more like that.

We're almost there. We just have make the word more shiny now and we're going to do that by using the brush tool (white, opacity: 80, sft round 17 pixels ) . Ctrl-Click the text layer to select the text. Now go over the light sides of the text with the white brush tool to make it even lighter.

Voila, there you have it. A nice, plastic word.

To make the light effect stronger, you can add a gradient background behind the text with the white side to the light side of the text.
